Soot is not necessarily what it used to be.
In modern society we surround ourselves with synthetic materials that give off dust particles and gasses when they are on fire. For example, PVC releases chlorides that develop hydrochloric acid if they come into contact with water. If the surface of the painting is exposed to this, it must be treated. Allocation on the surface of the painting of dust particles in connection with fire forms, immediately or gradually, the basis for changes in the character of the surface.
Different types of soot can create new foundations for the attachment of dust and, in this way, harmful particles that accumulate easily. If these are not removed, later damages can occur.
At higher temperatures gasses can be released in the foundation of the painting. This can lead to blistering. Here, this process is reversed..
Micro-organisms
Paintings that are exposed to water and/or high relative humidity stand in immediate danger of being attacked by micro-organisms. They find their source of nourishment in binding materials, oil and other organic or synthetic substances that make up a painting.
Being routinely exposed to fungus and trace substances can be injurious to one’s health. It is important that contaminated paintings be treated quickly.
Micro-organisms can be dangerous and destructive to both paintings and people. Security is of utmost importance in all of our working procedures.
n analysis from a tape sample from infected surfaces in this instance showed the occurrence of, among other things, chaetomium globosum, penicillium chrysogenum, trichoderma viride, plus unidentified varieties within the mold fungus families penicillium, aspergillus and other species.

Valuables are safe and secure in our vaults. In 2003 our workshop treated paintings that had a total value of about 40 million Norwegian kroner (between 6 and 7 million US dollars)..
